These trip up my son and I hate them, but the company has great service

The company's nice, but I loathe See Kai Run shoes. We originally had the Erics. It's nice that the leather is so soft, but it's TOO soft: the shoes immediately scuffed up and, a month or two (tops) after we got them, the velcro stitching failed, so the velcro detached from the closure strap, making them impossible to use.
The company, to their credit, had FANTASTIC customer service. I didn't even have to go through a phone tree. A real live person answered and immediately gave me help without requesting receipts, a precise date of purchase, etc. What a relief! They instructed me to go to the (brick and mortar) store where I'd bought the shoes for an exchange. I did so and there was no problem at the store either.
However, they only had a few remaining pairs of SKR shoes remaining in my son's size--all really unattractive, which I suppose is why they were still in stock. My son chose these, the Samuels. Possibly my least favorite, but they're his shoes!
Anyway, I can't blame the company for the shoe style, I knew what I was getting there. The new pair also scuffed up right away, but I could live with that, too. What I don't like is the extreme flexibility of the shoes. The bending of the sole causes my son to catch his toes on the ground when walking and running. He trips and falls CONSTANTLY while wearing these. We did buy them large, as one does with kids' shoes, and even slightly larger than we had done in the past with other models, but half a year later, he's still falling all the time. We had this problem with both the Erics and the Samuels. For a while I thought he just had to grow into them. Then spring came and I realized how long it had been. I also had more of a chance to see him wearing these around (instead of boots), and realized how bad the problem was. I know it's the shoes and not his coordination because he does fine in socks, bare feet, and winter boots.
The saleswoman at the store told us the shoes are made to be extremely flexible on purpose, that it is supposed be better for small children's feet. I note that many parents reviewing these shoes have much younger children than my son, who was 2 1/2 when we bought the Erics and is now 3. I could see that See Kai Run shoes might be a good step up from a Robeez-style slipper shoe. But my son clearly needs a more structured shoe.
Until now I've bought one pair of shoes to last each season. They're the one thing I always buy new, and I don't stint, because good shoes make such a difference. This will be the first pair that I will retire early. It's not that long until sandal season but I'm still going to get him another pair of sneaks because I feel so bad for my poor kid falling all the time.
Honestly, even if it weren't for the falling problem, I was unimpressed with their quality. I've never had any comparable problems with the other brand shoes I've bought him (Merrells, for instance) but the SKRs had not one but two (failing stitching and the scuffing).
I'm giving them two stars because great customer service is worth a nod. |
